Making the Community Smile Since 1996

Living Magazine, December 2016

Over the past two decades, Dr. Jennifer Buchanan has found many ways to make the local community smile. From the thousands of spectacular smiles she creates for her orthodontic patients to the popular, annual SMILES Charity Concert and Family Festival whose profits build homes for wounded veterans; from annual shoe drive for local students to her Halloween candy buy-back that’s seen thousands of pounds of candy donated to our troops, Dr. Buchanan makes our community smile.

Christmas Smiles

During the month of December those smiles are even brighter, thanks to Dr. Buchanan Orthodontics’ annual toy drive. Over the past 18 years, with help from her patients and their families, Dr. Buchanan has donated thousands of Christmas toys to local kids from lower income families. This year’s toy drive is in full swing with local high school cheerleaders and honor roll students helping collect toy donations to be distributed through WFAA’s Santa’s Helpers program. You can help by bringing new unwrapped toys to Dr. Buchanan Orthodontics by December 8th.

Orthodontic Excellence

Dr. Buchanan Orthodontics has helped thousands of patients of all ages realize a better-looking and healthier, better-functioning smile. Together with a staff with an amazing 150 years total combined experience, Dr. Buchanan embraces the very latest orthodontic technology while maintaining a highly personal touch, with Dr. Buchanan herself seeing every patient on every visit to the office.

Next-Generation Technology

Dr. Buchanan Orthodontics stays on the cutting edge by offering i-CAT Imaging which allows Dr. Buchanan to obtain 3-D images of a patient’s mouth, right in her office. State-of-the-art Lythos Digital Scanner has helped her do away with gooey, messy models of patients’ teeth. Impressions are taken digitally, in-office, much quicker than ever before. “And the Damon System allows me to achieve full, natural, 10-tooth smiles with light biologically-sensible forces, specifically designed to improve the overall facial result of each patient, without extracting teeth and without the bulky head gear like I wore as a child,” she said.

Insignia Customized Braces

One of the most exciting advancements in Dr. Buchanan’s 20 years in practice is Insignia Braces, which allow Dr. Buchanan to offer each patient 100% customized brackets and wires that fit their teeth—and only their teeth—for more precise treatment. Beginning with 3-D software representation of their exact tooth positioning, Dr. Buchanan can show each patient their finished result before they even begin treatment. Then each bracket is precisely calculated to affect their unique tooth movement in the most optimal way, resulting in fewer office visits, shorter office visits, and exemplary results.

“I’ve seen patients who were told they required jaw surgery and many who were told they had to have teeth extracted, before braces could straighten their smile,” Dr. Buchanan said. “But with Insignia I’m able to help them without surgery or extraction. The results are amazing, much faster, and treatment is far less invasive.”

Every year Dr. Buchanan awards several orthodontic scholarships to deserving patients. She promotes dental health at local schools, sponsors local sports teams, provides career guidance for students interested in dentistry, and hosts CPR training for dental professionals. She and her team honor appointment times and offer early morning and late evening appointments to accommodate patient’s schedules. They’re now accepting new patients.

Hi-Tech Clear Brackets Provide Fast, Comfortable Treatment, Extraordinary Smiles and Faces for Image-Conscious Adults and Teens

McKinney residents who want straight teeth and a fuller, more beautiful smile without the awkward look and discomfort of traditional braces no longer have to settle for metal brackets or clear aligners. Dr. Jennifer Buchanan of Buchanan Orthodontics/McKinney Braces is now offering Damon® Clear™, a virtually invisible braces system that delivers fast, comfortable treatment without the “metal mouth” look to accommodate today’s image-conscious adults and teens.

Traditional braces require elastic ties to hold wires in place, which can accumulate bacteria, stain or “yellow” during treatment and often require uncomfortable “tightening” that can actually hinder tooth movement and prolong treatment. In contrast, Damon Clear braces resist staining with the innovative Damon Smile “tieless” brackets and high-tech memory-shaped wires that eliminate the need for uncomfortable periodic “tightening.” With Damon, the wires move freely within the brackets for better oral hygiene and appearance, as well as fast, comfortable tooth movement.

“Damon Smile allows me to treat patients faster and more comfortably than ever before,” said Dr. Buchanan. “My patients appreciate the convenience and discreet appearance of the Damon Clear braces, and I can create beautiful smiles with better facial results compared to traditional braces.”

Damon Smile treatment uses light, continuous force wires with tieless brackets. The gentle pressure exerted by Damon Smile discourages the need for tooth extractions and the use of headgear in the vast majority of cases.

“Damon Smile is one of the most innovative orthodontic treatments on the market and it’s already been used to treat more than 4.5 million cases around the world,” Dr. Buchanan said. “We’re very pleased to bring this high-tech system to our patients in the McKinney area.”

Using Your Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to pay for orthodonture

Using Your Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to pay for orthodonture

Using a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to pay for orthodontic treatment is a great way to save a little money. An FSA allows you to be reimbursed using pre-tax money for your orthodontic expenses as services are being provided. For example, you can be reimbursed for monthly payment or for the down payment on treatment. While rules for individual plans vary, generally you cannot get reimbursed for last year’s payment past their deadline, or for services provided beyond the current plan period or year.

As a reminder, effective 2013, FSAs now limit employees’ annual contributions to no more than $2,500 per year. Melissa Bird, our financial Guru, is happy to assist you if you have any questions regarding the use of an FSA as it applies to your orthodontic treatment.

Early Orthodontic Screening

Dr. Jennifer Buchanan - Thursday, September 01, 2016
Early Orthodontic Screening

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children have an orthodontic screening no later than age 7. Early orthodontic screening can lead to the detection of dental and jaw growth problems that require interceptive treatment. Timely intervention may achieve results that are unattainable once the face and jaws have finished growing.

Not all orthodontic problems are caused by crooked teeth. Improper jaw development can lead to an unbalanced bite as well as facial disharmony. An underdeveloped lower jaw produces buck-teeth or an overbite and an overdeveloped lower jaw results in an under bite. Properly timed treatment with special orthodontic appliances can control the growth of the jaws and establish alignment in rapidly growing younger patients. Delaying treatment may result in the need for more invasive procedures to correct the problem.

Scientific research supports the important role of oral and facial esthetics in the psycho-social development of children. Children with crooked teeth or jaw imbalances often feel self-conscious. They are hesitant to talk with friends or teachers. They often cover their mouths when laughing or close their mouths when being photographed. When children feel confident about the way they look, they feel better about themselves-and their whole outlook on life can improve.

Gum disease may have ties to Alzheimers

Gum disease may have ties to Alzheimers

Oral bacteria from poor dental hygiene has been linked to brain tissue degeneration, a finding that shows a potential association between gum disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers examined samples from the brains of patients with and without dementia and found lipopolysaccharide, a component of Porphyromonas gingivalis, an oral bacterium, in four out of 10 Alzheimer’s disease brain samples. It was not found in any samples from the brains of people who did not have Alzheimer’s disease.

“This clearly shows that there is an association between oral bacteria and Alzheimer’s disease, but not causal association,” says Lakshmyya Kesavalu, Associate Professor of Periodontology at the University of Florida.

The researchers say the study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, is the first to show a link between the existence of the oral bacterium component lipopolysaccharide and Alzheimer’s disease. (Rhodenizer-Florida, 2014)

Dr. Buchanan advises patients to brush their teeth for 2 minutes twice a day and use a waterpik. She also recommends to floss regularly to prevent bacteria plaque build-up between teeth. Be sure to visit your dentist for regular cleanings twice a year too!

Latest Insignia Customized Braces Technology

“Smiles are a big part of a person’s identity and there’s never been a better time to consider the many benefits of today’s advanced orthodontic treatment,” said Dr. Buchanan “With Insignia, the level of customization I’m able to offer my patients is truly exceptional, as it allows me to design a treatment plan developed specifically to his or her unique facial structure and dental anatomy. The best part is, I can give patients, from kids to adults, the beautiful smile they’ve always wanted, but with fewer office visits and faster results—a win-win.”

When beginning Insignia treatment, Dr. Buchanan first scans the patient’s mouth, generating a virtual 3D model of their smile structure. Unlike most orthodontic cases, this 3D model creates a visual representation of patients’ anticipated results, giving them a clear vision of their new, beautiful smile transformation before treatment even begins. Additionally, Insignia allows Dr. Buchanan to review and conduct a thorough smile analysis based on each individual’s specific smile anatomy. Once Dr. Buchanan selects a customized treatment plan, she is able to order brackets and wires tailored to each individual patient. This is unlike traditional braces that are generic and one-size-fits-all. As a result, patients’ final smile is unique to their own dental structure. By customizing treatment based on each person’s specific facial features, Dr. Buchanan is able to eliminate minor adjustments and tweaks throughout the treatment process, leading to fewer in-office visits, faster results and improved patient comfort.

“Every patient deserves orthodontic treatment that is precisely customized to their unique case, making Insignia an ideal offering for anyone looking to improve their smile.” states Dr. Buchanan.

Orthodontic Survival Kit - Orthodontist McKinney TX
  1. 1. Toothbrush & Toothpaste – Yes, we know this is a little bit of a hassle but make sure you brush and floss after lunch to keep your smile healthy. Oral hygiene is always important but it’s ESPECIALLY important when you have braces.
  2. 2. WaterPik - if you have a portable one take it with you
  3. 3. Mirror – We recommend keeping a compact mirror in your locker and/or backpack so you can check out your braces if something feels funny.
  4. 4. Wax – Keep a case of wax in your backpack in case you have a pokey wire or any cheek irritation.
  5. 5. Rubber Bands – Don’t get behind on your treatment! Make sure you have spare rubber bands in case one breaks at school and to replace after lunch.
  6. 6. Retainer Case – We see it ALL the time…Where did my retainer go? I had it on my lunch tray…Whoops! It’s in the trash! Avoid having to dig through trash and the added expenses of new retainers. Keep your retainer in a retainer case whenever it’s not in your mouth!
  7. 7. Mouth Guard – If you play contact sports, make sure you wear your mouth guard to protect your teeth and braces. Studies have shown that athletes are 60 times more likely to damage teeth when NOT wearing a mouth guard!
